The Active Start and FUNdamentals
programs are new sport initiatives developed by Special Olympics BC
(SOBC) to develop basic motor/sport skills through fun and positive
movement experiences for children with intellectual disabilities. Since 1980, SOBC has been a progressive sport organization providing sport training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities. These youth initiatives grow from understanding the importance of sport and movement activities for children too young to participate in competitive sport programs. Great success of Active Start and FUNdamentals rests on parents/caregiver participation. The programs strive to educate all involved in order to foster lifelong skill development for athletes. Here are some of our coaches and volunteers. FUNdamentals is a family-centered program targeting young athletes in BC between the ages of 7–10 years. The program provides children with a more in-depth introduction to sport-related motor skills along with training and competition while maintaining an atmosphere of fun and meaningful interaction. An additional role of the program is providing continued education surrounding nutrition, physical fitness, and the importance of the support of the family in developing a healthy athlete. FUNdamentals also acts as an introduction for participants and families/caregivers to the sporting opportunities and resources provided by Special Olympics BC.
